Songs From The Russian Soul
*** JAN FAIRLEY SWEET ECA (VENUE 186)
IN THIS show, five women dressed like exquisite Russian Dolls exuberantly dance and sing a flowing sequence of strong, beautiful songs rich in harmony. It's less reminiscent of the Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble than Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares. While there's less of a nod to revamped ironic modern renditions of village songs à la Finland's Värttinä, St Petersburgh's Koleso group have a passion and freshness that is compelling. Backed by accordion, balalaikas and occasional recorded sounds, their playfulness spills over when invited audience members gleefully get involved in competitive game songs, finding their inner child. A lovely show offering a vital glimpse of old Russia.
